Rate-distortion Optimized Video Frame Dropping on Active Network Nodes

چکیده
We propose a rate-distortion optimized video frame dropping strategy that can be applied on active network nodes in case of heavy traffic load. Our approach relies on side information that is sent along with the video bit-streams. The side information consists of a rate vector containing the frame size (in bytes) of every picture as well as a distortion matrix describing the reconstruction distortion (in MSE) observed for a Group of Pictures given a certain frame loss pattern. In contrast to QoS-based approaches, our scheme offers larger flexibility and supports dynamic frame importance control. When comparing our rate-distortion optimized dropping concept with priority-based dropping strategies, significantly improved reconstruction quality is observed. Improvements of up to 8dB are obtained for our simulation setup.

Rate-distortion optimized frame dropping and scheduling for multi-user conversational and streaming video
We propose a Rate-Distortion (RD) optimized strategy for frame-dropping and scheduling of multi-user conversational and streaming videos. We consider a scenario where conversational and streaming videos share the forwarding resources at a network node. Two buffers are setup on the node to temporarily store the packets for these two types of video applications. For streaming video, a big buffer ...

QoS requirements in video multicast services are diverse due to the heterogeneity of the network and clients, and the difference in users’ preferences on the requested video quality. In previous work, we have proposed a multicast tree construction algorithm, considering an active network in which active nodes can filter or transcode the video stream, which assists the server to provide various ...

This article introduces a method for efficiently transmitting medium grain scalable video packets over a transmission path consisting of multiple wireless links. Medium grain scalability provides bit rate adaptation according to the available bit rate by dropping a number of video packets in the compressed bit stream. In other words, rate-distortion control can be achieved by means of packet tr...
متن کاملEvaluating the Streaming of FGS–Encoded Video with Rate–Distortion Traces
The MPEG–4 video coding standard has recently been enriched with Fine Granularity Scalability (FGS) a new coding technique expressly designed for video streaming. With FGS coding the video stream can be flexibly truncated at very fine granularity to adapt to the available network resources. In this report we provide a framework for the evaluation of the streaming of FGS-encoded video. The frame...
متن کاملOptimized video streaming for networks with varying delay
This paper presents a method for distortion-optimized streaming of predictively coded video over packet networks with varying delay. In networks with significant delay variations, coded video frames can arrive late at the decoder and miss their respective display deadlines. Furthermore, due to predictive coding, a late frame can also prevent a number of subsequent frames from being displayed pr...
